In January 2024, the Policy Research Innovation Development and Education (PRIDE) team, in collaboration with Ms. Shereen Abbadi, successfully completed the Employment Impact Assessment Report for the International Labor Organization (ILO).
This report, developed as part of our engagement with the Sindh People Housing for Flood Affectees (SPHF), evaluates the employment implications of the SPHF initiative using a case study approach. It represents a crucial step in understanding and addressing the economic impact of rehabilitation efforts in flood-affected areas.
Acknowledgments:
We extend our gratitude to Mr. Tomas Stenstrom and Ms. Rabia Razzaque from the ILO for their guidance throughout the project. Our thanks also go to SPHF and its implementing partner, HANDS, for their support during data collection and fieldwork.
Key Findings on Employment Impact
The assessment provides estimates of direct and indirect employment effects resulting from construction of houses funded by the Sindh Flood Emergency Housing Reconstruction Project. In collaboration with its five implementing partners. The construction of one housing unit results in 160 Person-Day of employment, of which 67 are direct and 93 are in the supply chain. These findings indicate that Sindh Flood Emergency Housing Reconstruction Project’s plan of construction two million housing units, has the potential of creating over one million Full-Time-Equivalent Year (FTE-Year) of employment of which about 446,700 are direct FTE-Year of employment, and about 630,000 FTE-Year of employment in the supply chain.
