Impact of the floods on the achievement of the MDG Employment Targets
Principal Investigators: Dr. Lubna Shahnaz
The Government (EAD) has endorsed a UN initiative to estimate the implications and resource consequences of the monsoon floods on human development in Pakistan, using the MDGs and related Target Indicators as proxies for human development. The Flood Impact on MDG Analysis (FIMA) is intended to highlight the human dimensions of the crisis and mobilize resources for multi-year initiatives to ensure a full recovery from the disaster. The second target under MDG1, Target 1B, focuses on achieving ‘full and productive employment and decent work for all, including women and young people’. This target recognizes that for the large majority of people labour is their main asset, and overcoming poverty and hunger requires opportunities for decent work. ‘Decent work sums up the aspirations of people worldwide in their working lives – their aspirations to opportunity and income; to rights, voice and recognition; to family stability and personal development; and to fairness and gender equality. Decent work comprises four inseparable, interrelated and mutually supportive pillars: employment, rights, social protection and social dialogue.
